Of Science And Progress
Niles Is a scientist living in post-nuclear apocalypse Boston. He stays in a small building built by some friends, containing his room and home, as well as his own laboratory. He acts as the settlement's resident doctor and surgeon along with his boyfriend and nurse, Theo.
REPlace fear of the unknown with curiosity
Standing at a measly 5'2, as thin as a twig and having as much muscle as a leaf, he's not much to look at. Niles is pretentious, impatient and easily frustrated. He prefers solitude in his laboratory rather than socializing, which he isn't very good at. Despite his cold exterior, he's a very dedicated doctor and will do everything he can to get you feeling better if you're injured or sick. Niles is still coming to terms with his personal identity, overcoming his internalized homophobia and accepting the fact that he's been a shitty person in his life. With the help of his new friends and his boyfriends Silas and Theo, he's
bettering himself as a person and learning more about life on the surface everyday.
Backstory
OF A SCIENTIFIC NATURE
Niles is snarky, pretentious and insanely intelligent due to the fact that he grew up in an underground scientific institute. It was constructed before the bombs fell to host and protect the world's brightest minds and most developed technological advances. By the time Niles was born, the institute had developed extremely lifelike androids they would use to do their bidding. His father being at the head of the institute left him with little time or care to look after Niles. In attempts to get his father's love and attention, he obsessively devoted himself to research and science.
You treat human contact like a transaction
(Tw for eating disorders and ocd in this section!) His parent's absence in his life did leave him with one good outcome; Niles became head of the robotics division of the institute due to how talented of a doctor and roboticist he was. This costed him however. Niles's mental health took huge hits due to his obsessive behavior. He'd miss meals, stay up through the night to work on his projects, and developed EDNOS. He became a recluse, and never developed good communication skills. The only one who made him feel secure and relaxed was his synth assistant, T4-30. Although fraternizing with Synths was forbidden, Niles found himself growing more affectionate towards him as time went on. He and this synth, who he gave the name Theo, began a secretive relationship. Being a bit of a shut in who was scared of criticism, he would continue to carry on personal experiments without outside approval.
OF A SCIENTIFIC NATURE
It wasn't long until Eliza, Niles right hand man in the robotics sector found out about their relationship and the unapproved experiments. Eliza had never been too fond of Niles and was out for Niles‘s seat as head of robotics. Thus, she didn’t hesitate to start telling people about the affair and the missing supplies. When word got to the director of the Institute, Niles father, he wasn’t happy. Niles was expelled from the Institute for theft of institute property used for unapproved personal tests and
inappropriate relationships with a synth . He was kicked out to the surface where he had never been. Niles hid in an older building for a night before Theo broke out of the Institute and came along with him. The two made their way to a truckstop that was occupied by a few people they did know in the wasteland. They kindly took Niles and Theo in despite the way he had treated them before. Niles currently resides in a lab next to the truckstop and is learning more about the world around him every day.
